I Did It Anyways Edens Story - When I Grow Up
I Did It Anyways Edens Story - When I Grow Up Why Iâm Bailing on Law School (and quit my day job) This series used to be called The Recession is Bullhonkey series, where I shared stories of those who had gotten hired and/or started their own businesses (or sometimes both!) since 2008. In 2016, though, it felt irrelevant, so Iâll now be sharing these made-my-dream-career-happen-despite-challenges-and-adversity stories under the title I Did It Anyways, because by golly, they did! Sometimes knowing what you dont want is just as or more! important as knowing what you do want! Edens post below is for all of us who made a decision, and then changed our minds. For those of you who just didnt know the answer and allowed it to be OK. Heres to us or something to aspire to! Why Iâm Bailing on Law School (and quit my day job) My name is Eden, Iâm 23 years old, and I spent the last two years convincing myself that I want to go to law school. I swear, it really did sound like a good idea at the time. Work wasnât satisfying me quite the way I expected it would and I wanted more. My gravitation to legal clubs in high school and college made law school seem like a good fit for me. So, my instincts said apply, and that I did. Fast-forward to today â" my seat deposit is paid, my apartment in Brooklyn is secured, and Iâm set to begin classes this August. Plot twist: Iâm not going. Itâs not that I fear I wonât be successful as an attorney. On the contrary, I really believe I could have been great in a courtroom. Rather, my worry stems from the uncertainty of whether the profession would really bring me happiness, or if it would simply disrupt the balanced lifestyle I try to maintain⦠whether itâs what I really want for myself, or if I pursued if for all the wrong reasons. To sum up my garbled thoughts⦠Iâm confused. Iâve received sharp criticism from many people who view the recent uncertainty in my professional life as a sign of the type of person I am, as if my indecision has seriously inconvenienced them in some way. Perhaps they judge me because they remember that this isnât the first time Iâve drastically changed my plans at the last minute. Whatever their reasons, theyâve coined me rather harshly as indecisive and privileged â" just the sort of criticism I want to hear at this particular juncture of my life. My response to these people: I am privileged, absolutely. Itâs a reality I do not take lightly. Indecisive, correct there, too⦠I also call it my 20s. I canât help but wonder why itâs so taboo to change plans and make mistakes. Our 20s are supposed to be the years we royally screw up, take irrational risks and explore the world. Yet, instead, many of us feel lured into our unforgiving go to school, get a job, get married, have a family, and do it in that order society. At 23, we should really know which direction weâre headed in, right? Wrong. Iâm breaking the silence and admitting to the world that I have no idea where life is about to take me. But, at least I know I wonât be going $200, 000.00 into debt trying to figure it out. Sure, law school might have been a great adventure. Who knows, maybe somewhere down the line Iâll apply again and actually show up on the first day of class. Then again, maybe I wonât. The point is⦠I just donât know and that should be okay. To be young and confused should be okay. Iâll wrap this up since I could go on forever. Iâm dedicating this post to all of my 20-something year old friends, acquaintances, and random readers (if ever Iâm lucky enough to have random people reading my blog). This is to us and to our years of complete and utter confusion. Letâs enjoy the journey and hope we figure it out⦠eventually, but no rush. Cheers. How to Choose Your Best Career Path - Your Career Intel
How to Choose Your Best Career Path - Your Career IntelAs a recruiter, its my job to assist people who are asking themselves, What is my career path? and How do I find my career? If you are asking similar questions, it may be time to think about whats not working for you in your current lage and what it would take to make it right. A job change should improve your quality of lifehowever you define it. Here are six steps that can help you figure out how to choose a career path and find your dream job.Identify whats wrong nowAre you tired of being micromanaged, or having your ideas shot down? Maybe you like your company but you dont have opportunities to advance. If you take time to examine whats wrong with your current job, you can start identifying the specific qualities of the career you want.Get the behind-the-scenes storyTheres more to a job than whats expressed in a job descriptionask a recruiter or someone in your network to find out the real story. Before you say yes to what lo oks like a step up in your career, learn how the company is structured, what the people are like, and why one company might be better for you than others. Otherwise you might find yourself hopping from one job to another instead of advancing in your career path.Consider whats keeping you at your current jobDoes your company have a hold over you? For example, do you have stock options that are waiting to vest? If so, perhaps another company would give you a signing bonus as compensation, plus equity. The point is to try to visualize opportunities instead of limitations. Think about what it would take to make you moveideally to your dream job.Reflect on your career aspirationsWhat roles and responsibilities are you looking for next? Many people prefer an environment where they can wear more than one hat. As you reflect on your career goals, look beyond the obvious monetary or equity draws to consider other determining factors. Do you want to live somewhere else? Enjoy a shorter commut e time? Work from home on Fridays? Whats the recipe that would make you jump from your current situation to a better one?Dont wait to be happierIf you are one of the many people who go to and from work siloed in their own little world, you might be having a difficult time gauging your happiness. Even if you think youre satisfied with your career, its always worthwhile to learn about other opportunities. Being able to consider other jobs while having the option to stay at your current position takes the fear out of the search process. You might find yourself wishing that you had started looking around years ago.Consider risks and ask big picture questionsImagine youve found your dream jobthen two years later the company goes under. Or you show up one morning to find your companys been acquired. No matter the size of the company or how promising it seemed several years ago, anything can happen. Consider the risks associated with your career path choices and develop a plan that can hel p you adapt.Whether you decide to relocate if the landscape changes, or to change jobs if the marketplace gets tough, if youve done the hard thinking about your career path beforehand, youll be ready to act when the opportunity arises. What has guided you on your career path? Please add your comments to the discussion.

This Engineer Channeled Her Passion Into a One-of-A-Kind Tech Career
This Engineer Channeled herbei Passion Into a One-of-A-Kind Tech Career Sitting in a sleek room replete with large screens and Mac computers, Allison Ritter comes off a bit like the captain of a Spielberg-esque spacecraft. And, in a way, she is as creative director ofIBMs X-Force Command Center, Ritter is in charge of designing a highly avant-garde series of games that help corporate clients prepare for crises like security breaches. This whole space creates and allows us to amp up that pulse- and heart-racing feel, Ritter said, gesturing around. We want you to feel the pressure. We want you to sweat.Pulling from real examples of technical crises, like breaches and hacks, the X-Force Command Center shows clients what it would feel like if the digital security of their company (in this case, a fictional one) was compromised in a theatrical, hands-on way. Using a state-of-the-art cyber range simulator, Ritter and team create immersive crises that participants must navigate themselves o ut of.Its sort of like a flight simulator, she added. Its okay to go in and crash the plane. We want you to do that thats what youre here for. We want you to fail in this room versus fail in the real world.IBM is Hiring Browse Opportunities. The Command Center is based on a creative technology thats already been in use for governments and militaries. IBMs model, however, is the first such experience for the private sector. And its one that has major implications, not just for the way we digitally protect ourselves, but also for the way we learn. At IBM, Ritters been given the freedom to experiment with engaging participants through non-traditional, classroom-style methods. Especially as you move into the workforce, people dont want to sit through a lecture to learn. Doing something thats a little more hands on is much more engaging. Many times, you dont remember exactly what someone told you, but you remember how it made you feel. And were creating that experience here.Certainly, help ing to spearhead such an avant-garde project isnt typically on the menu for people who, like Ritter, are still at relatively early stages of their career and neither is having the freedom to be experimental and boundary-pushing within a major corporation. But at IBM, Ritter has found her experience to be quite the opposite.A big piece of working in both the technology and creative spaces is not being afraid to try something new that might be outside of what youve normally done, she said. For us, this is a new space, so we dont fully know what is the art of the possible. You can really make it what you want, which has been very rewarding. She adds that if you have that passion and drive, IBM is excellent at encouraging and working with you to bring your visions to life something that not many people can say about their jobs today. For Ritter, in addition to her work with the Command Center, that encouragement meant attending an IBM bootcamp that ultimately led to the creation of an app still in use internally today. There are opportunities here its such a big company and it has a lot of stab und sttze, she said. If youre interested in a subject and want to learn about it, you can. You can take that opportunity and create something unique.Ultimately, in order to bring unimagined possibilities to life, having a strong support system is paramount. And as an IBMer, one need only look to the desk next to them for that support, Ritter said.As individuals who work at IBM, I think we have a lot of power to move and change the ways that we want to see the company growing, she added. If you believe in an idea and put the work in to create it, people will listen. I think its wonderful that these types of people are here at IBM, they support our creativity, which allows us to bring different ideas to light and change the mold.If this level of support sounds as amazing to you as it does to us, you should considerchecking out openings at IBM theyre hiring across the country- -Fairygodboss is proud to partner with IBM. 3 simple but highly effective tips to train your brain to be smarter
3 simple but highly effective tips to train your brain to be smarter3 simple but highly effective tips to train your brain to be smarterYou likely go to the gym to work your muscles, hike for endurance, and do yoga for flexibility- but how often does your brain get a workout? If you dont take care to exercise your brain regularly, it can wither, just like unworked muscles.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThe human brain is made up of nerve cells called neurons, connected by synapses, which transport information from one neuron to the other. Just like other muscles and organs, the brain changes with age- synapses fire more slowly, some cells die off, and the overall mass of the organ shrinks. But studies have shown that any exercising of the brain may not only stave off brain degeneration but can also reverse memory loss and improve mental agility. Here are some simple tips and trick s that can make your brain faster, sharper and smarter1. Try using mental modelsMany of the most successful self-made billionaire entrepreneurs- Ray Dalio,Elon Musk, andcharlottenburger Munger- all swear by mental models.A mental model is a concept, framework, or worldview that you carry around in your mind to help you interpret the world and understand the relationship between things. For example, supply and demand is a mental model that helps you understand the economy.Entropyis a mental model that makes sense of disorder and decay. And game theory is a mental model that helps you understand how relationships and trust work. The brain needs a variety of mental models to piece together a complete picture of the world. The more sources you have to draw upon, the clearer your thinking becomes. The best thinkers avoid looking at life through the lens of one subject or strategy. Here are some useful mental models you can use to improve brain functionCircle of competence. This mental model was developed by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger to describe limiting your financial investments in areas where you may have limited understanding or experience. More broadly, it recommends recognizing the limits of your knowledge to develop an edge over others. When ego drives your undertakings, you wind up with cognitive blind spots. But understanding your circle of competence improves decision-making and outcomes.Occams razor.Attributed to the medieval philosopher William of Occam, this mental model holds that simple explanations are more likely to be true than complicated ones. Instead of wasting your time trying to disprove complex scenarios, you can make decisions more confidently by basing them on the explanation that has the fewest moving parts.Inversion.Most of us tend to think one way about a problem forward. Inversion allows us to flip the problem around and think backward. Sometimes its good to start at the beginning, but it can be more useful to start at the end. Dev eloped by the ancient Stoic philosophers, inversion is a powerful tool to improve your thinking because it helps you identify and remove obstacles to success.Hanlons razor.Named for Robert J. Hanlon, this philosophical razor suggests not attributing to malice that which is more easily explained by stupidity. By not generally assuming that bad results are the fault of a bad actor, you look for options instead of missing opportunities. This model reiterates that people make mistakes and forces you to ask yourself is another reasonable explanation? These are just a few ofthousandsof useful mental models. The quality of our thinking is directly proportional to the number of models in our heads. The more models we have, the more likely we are to keep our brains sharp.2. Play gamesThe brain can be lazy. Once it realizes it has mastered something, it stops trying. But there are steps you can take to increase the range of mental motion by activating different parts of the brain. The trick is to constantly push your limits. Brainteasers and other problem-solving games are useful here. Here are some optionsSodoku. To complete a Sudoku puzzle you have to look ahead and follow trails of consequences- if you put a six in this box, that one must be an eight and this one a four, etc. This planning helps improve short-term memory and concentration.Lumosity.Lumosity is one of the most-developedbrain training websites around. It provides fun brain training and mental fitness games, tests, and activities backed by science. Youll challenge your brain, and keep track of your results and improvement. In addition to the website, apps are available for iOS and Android, so you can train on the go.Crossword puzzles.Crosswords are a classic brain trainer, accessing not only verbal language but your memory from many dimensions of knowledge. Studies have shown thatcrossword puzzles may delay memory loss and preserve cognitive function.Peak. This free app provides more than 40 fun games to he lp you exercise your brain. Peak is designed to improve your memory, sharpen your problem-solving skills, and develop your mental agility. Each game has been developed by neuroscientists and the app offers in-depth insights to help you track your progress. You should also do mental math whenever possible. Instead of whipping out your calculator app, calculate the tip in your head or try to total up the amount for items purchased at the grocery store.Research shows that variation in our mental activity is the key to long-term success. By regularly putting your brain to work, you can improve memory and other types of cognitive function.3. Exercise, meditate, and dietRegular exercise, proper nutrition, and mindfulness meditation all increase blood flow to the brain, which helps to enhance cognitive reserves. In particular, research shows thatregular aerobic exercise boosts the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning. Other studies show that the part s of the brain thatcontrol thinking and memoryare bigger in people who exercise than in people who dont.Diet is also an important component of brain health.AMediterranean-style dietrich in fish, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, olives, and nuts helps maintain brain health and may reduce the risk of Alzheimers disease. Fish like tuna, mackerel, and salmon are rich in fatty acids that have been shown to help neuron function. And dont forget to take your Omega 3- these fatty acids play an important role in brain function and development. Finally, mindfulness meditation is great for keeping your brain sharp. A recent UCLAstudyfound that long-term meditators had better-preserved brains than non-meditators as they aged. Likewise, a Harvard studyfound that eight weeks of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was found to increase cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which governs learning and memory.Because nearly everything we do requires a sharp mind, these simple hacks are a n o-brainer.This article first appeared on Minutes Magazine. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
